Telkomsat signs cooperation agreement to strengthen satellite communications in Indonesia

PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) has signed a Four-Party Strategic Cooperation Agreement with China Telecom Corporation Limited Satellite Communications Branch (CTSC), PT China Telecom Indonesia (CTID), and PT Skyconn Satelit Indonesia (Skyconn) to strengthen the development and implementation of satellite communication services in Indonesia.

The agreement was signed at Telkomsat’s Satellite Transmission Headquarters by Telkomsat President Director Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf, General Manager of China Telecom Satellite Communications Branch Zhang Xin, General Manager of China Telecom Indonesia Tan Guohua, and President Director of PT Skyconn Satelit Indonesia Cahyadi Burhan.

Telkomsat President Director Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf said the signing marks an important milestone in the company’s efforts to reinforce the national connectivity ecosystem through the expansion of satellite communication services.

Through this collaboration, all parties are committed to accelerating the technical and operational readiness of satellite communication services so they can be widely utilized by the public. The cooperation will support emergency communications as well as connectivity services in underserved and unserved areas, particularly in Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions (3T areas).

“As a satellite operator serving an archipelagic nation with unique geographical challenges, we are strongly aligned with China Telecom Satellite’s mission to ensure inclusive and reliable connectivity,” Lukman said in a written statement as quoted by Finance.detik.com, on Monday, January 19, 2026.

He added that the strategic agreement will serve as an initial foundation for further discussions toward more comprehensive long-term cooperation.

“Telkomsat is optimistic that this collaboration will create sustainable added value for all stakeholders, while making a tangible contribution to Indonesia’s digital transformation and the equitable distribution of national connectivity,” he said.

Currently, Telkomsat operates five active satellites with a total capacity exceeding 70 Gbps and manages more than 30,000 active network nodes connecting over 3.5 million users, including approximately 10,000 users outside Indonesia.

These capabilities strengthen Telkomsat’s role in supporting nationwide connectivity through satellite-based services, particularly in regions with limited terrestrial infrastructure.

“Bridging the digital divide is not only a technological challenge, but also a shared responsibility to the people and the nation. We are deeply inspired by China Telecom Satellite’s achievements, especially in satellite communications development, emergency communication support, and efforts to deliver inclusive connectivity. These innovations demonstrate how satellite technology can deliver real and meaningful impact, especially in critical situations and in remote or underserved areas,” Lukman concluded.
