Azerbaijan has taken a significant step toward expanding its presence in the Asian travel market with a high-level initiative designed to deepen tourism cooperation with Japan. From 22 to 27 October 2025, the Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB) hosted a comprehensive familiarization trip for representatives from five leading Japanese travel companies, marking a fresh chapter in bilateral tourism relations. The visit highlighted Azerbaijan’s cultural diversity, landscapes, and modern hospitality infrastructure while opening doors for long-term tourism partnerships.
The delegation embarked on a curated journey that introduced them to both the historical heart and the vibrant future of Azerbaijan. Their tour began in Baku, a city where medieval history meets contemporary architecture along the Caspian Sea. The group experienced the timeless charm of Icherisheher, Baku’s UNESCO-recognized Old City, a labyrinth of ancient stone structures, caravanserais, and mosques that echo centuries of Silk Road history. They also visited the Gobustan State Reserve, another UNESCO-listed heritage site renowned for its prehistoric rock carvings and intriguing mud volcanoes, offering a glimpse into the earliest chapters of human civilization.
Beyond Baku, the delegation explored some of Azerbaijan’s most scenic and culturally rich regions. In Shamakhi, they discovered the nation’s historic roots as an ancient capital and hub of poetry and astronomy. The journey continued to Gabala, a favorite mountain escape known for lush greenery, alpine scenery, and outdoor adventure experiences. In Shaki, the delegation visited the exquisite Shaki Khan’s Palace, famed for its intricate stained-glass windows crafted without nails or glue. The final regional stop, Gakh, opened windows to traditional mountain village life and hospitality, reflecting the warm cultural identity at the heart of Azerbaijani society.
Throughout the trip, the guests had the opportunity to interact with local tourism operators, visit hotels, dine on authentic Azerbaijani cuisine, and learn about the country’s emerging tourism products—ranging from cultural tours and nature adventures to wellness retreats and gastronomy experiences. Special focus was given to tourism segments expected to appeal strongly to Japanese travelers, including historical tours, scenic escapes, tea culture experiences, and Silk Road heritage routes.
The familiarization program concluded on 27 October with a targeted B2B networking session in Baku. The event brought together Japanese travel trade professionals and key Azerbaijani tourism stakeholders—including tour operators, DMCs, hoteliers, and experience providers. The meeting served as a productive exchange platform where industry representatives discussed market trends, traveler expectations, and product development opportunities tailored to the Japanese market. New collaboration avenues were explored, with both sides expressing enthusiasm for curated travel itineraries, joint marketing campaigns, and future tourism investments.
This initiative signals Azerbaijan’s increasing commitment to diversifying its tourism portfolio and expanding its reach across Asia. With Japan recognized as a high-value outbound travel market driven by cultural curiosity, nature appreciation, and strong interest in authentic heritage experiences, Azerbaijan is positioning itself as a new and compelling destination for Japanese travelers seeking depth, beauty, and discovery.
By strengthening trade relations and building destination awareness through strategic initiatives like this familiarization trip, Azerbaijan Tourism Board continues its mission to elevate Azerbaijan’s global tourism profile. The successful exchange has laid the foundation for long-term cooperation, with upcoming projects expected to encourage greater visitor flows from Japan in the years ahead.
Azerbaijan is not just opening its doors—it is building bridges of cultural understanding and tourism partnership that promise mutual growth, sustainable development, and memorable travel experiences for international visitors.
